Subsequent to his retirement from the US Navy in 1982, Rear Admiral Miller served as President of the State University of New York Maritime College, retiring for the second time in August 1995.

Rear Admiral Miller began his Naval career in August of 1953 in the Engineering Department of USS NOA (DD 841). In July of 1956 he assumed command of USS PORTAGE (PCE 902), a Naval Reserve Training Ship in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The beginning of 1957 saw him embarking, as one of the first officers in the Navy, on a new phase of his career in Surface Nuclear Power, reporting to the Nuclear Power School at the National Reactor Testing Station in Idaho. His next orders assigned him to the pre-commissioning crew of USS ENTERPRISE (CVAN 65), the Navy's first nuclear powered aircraft carrier.

Admiral Miller's tour of duty in the Reactor Department aboard ENTERPRISE continued until February 1964 when he became the Executive Officer of the Atlantic Fleet destroyer USS WALLACE L. LIND (DD 703). Upon departing LIND in July 1965, he attended the Command and Staff Course at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. After completion of the course, he was ordered to USS BAINBRIDGE (DLGN 25) as Executive Officer marking the beginning of his second tour with the nuclear surface fleet. He made two deployments to Vietnam in BAINBRIDGE.

Prior to reporting to his third nuclear surface ship tour with the pre-commissioning crew as Commanding Officer of USS CALIFORNIA (CGN 36), Admiral Miller served as Commanding Officer of USS VOGE (DE 1047) from 1969 to 1971. He was assigned to USS CALIFORNIA from August 1971 until March 1976.

Admiral Miller was then assigned to the Ship Acquisition Division (OP-37) on the Staff of the Chief of Naval Operations. He was selected for Flag in March 1977 and immediately returned to sea as Commander Cruiser Destroyer Group ONE, making two deployments as a battle group commander to the Western Pacific. In 1979 he reported for duty as Commander Navy Recruiting Command remaining until his retirement from Naval Service on 1 September 1982.

During his Naval Service, Rear Admiral Miller was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Navy Commendation Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award, the Naval Achievement Medal and service ribbons for duty in Korea, Cuba, and Vietnam. He was recently awarded the U. S. Coast Guard Distinguished Public Service Medal.

Rear Admiral Miller graduated from the State University of New York Maritime College in June 1953 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marine Transportation.

At Maritime he was the Cadet Navigator on his first class cruise and was a Regimental Officer his first class year. He also participated in inter-mural sports, primarily football.

Rear Admiral Miller became the Dockmaster for Centerport Yacht Club in Northport Harbor, New York for 3 years after retiring as President of SUNY Maritime College. He presently is Vice Chairman of the Long Island Maritime Museum and he holds an active U. S. Coast Guard Masters License.

Admiral Miller graduated from Freeport High School on Long Island, New York in 1949. To offset expenses he worked in a local boat yard while in high school and also while attending Maritime.

Admiral Miller resides in Centerport, New York with his wife Kay. His two children and his grandchildren reside in nearby Connecticut.
